Procedure to Remove Saggy Skin Soars Are Trending

The latest trend in male groin grooming is a scrotal lift.  The procedure, otherwise referred to as scrotoplasty or reduction, is performed to reduce, repair or reconstruct the scrotum to get rid of excess scrotal skin.

And with men more body conscious than ever, doctors say the op is rising in popularity as word spreads.

The nip and tuck procedure was first carried out to correct abnormalities, treat cancer patients or those who had suffered an injury down below.

But clinics now offer it as a standard cosmetic treatment alongside more established procedures such as moob surgery or a nose job.

Gerard Lambe, a consultant plastic surgeon in Cheshire and spokesperson for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, told MailOnline the genital surgery was on the rise.

'The genital lift is a relatively new surgery but there's been a steady increase in the number of men and women having genital surgery,' he said.

'It's a relatively straightforward thing to do, albeit in a sensitive area.
He said the main motivator behind the procedure is to reverse one of the many unwelcome side effects of ageing.

Both male and female sexual organs shrink with age and scrotums are not exempt from the general sagging seen elsewhere.

He said the popularity of the procedure has risen in the last 18 months and said it was the equivalent to women choosing to have breast surgery.

'It's typically the older gentleman having the operation, mostly those over 50, Mr Lambe told MailOnline.

'It's mainly self-consciousness as the procedure is only really going to change someone aesthetically.

'It's those who are trying to keep themselves looking and feeling good for as long as possible.'

The scrotum comprises muscle which is designed to tighten and loosen to help regulate sperm temperature.

But like every other muscle, gravity takes its toll and it can lose tone with age and start to droop.

This can cause discomfort - from getting the saggy skin caught in clothing to being problematic when cycling.

Whether it's for vanity or necessity, the aim of the procedure is to restore a natural appearance of the scrotum and, in doing so, boost self-esteem and confidence.

The op, which takes little over an hour, works by removing excess skin then rejoining the muscle at the scrotum seam to minimise scarring.

It is performed under local anaesthetic with patients usually in and out of the clinic in the same day.

Men can expect to feel a little tender for a couple of days afterwards - but the swelling and discomfort should go down within a week.
It carries the same risk as any other operation, such as infection or scarring, but complications are uncommon, surgeons say.
However patients are advised to abstain from sex for four weeks and strenuous activities for up to six weeks, Mr Lambe says.

A spokesperson for the London Bridge Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Clinic, one of the few places currently offering the treatment, confirmed it had also seen an increase in the number of men choosing to have it for purely aesthetic reasons.
